The Hartford Recognized As A Top 100 Military-Friendly Employer For Third Consecutive Year

HARTFORD, Conn.-( Business Wire )-

For the third consecutive year, The Hartford has been recognized as a Top 100 Military-Friendly Employer® by G.I. Jobs magazine.

“We are honored to be named a top military-friendly employer,” said Eileen Whelley, executive vice president of human resources at The Hartford. “Creating and maintaining a diverse and inclusive workforce is a top priority for The Hartford. Veterans are an important part of our culture. The skills they gain during their time of service translate well into the business environment and they are reliable, dedicated team members.”

The Top 100 Military-Friendly Employer list is drawn from a sample of 5,000 companies whose annual revenues exceeded $500 million. Criteria include the strength of company military recruiting efforts, percentage of new hires with prior military service, retention programs and company policies toward National Guard and Reserve service. The Hartford moved up in the rankings to No. 68 in 2012 from No. 85 in 2011.

The Hartford, which currently employs more than 500 veterans, has a variety of programs in place to help recruit, retain and support veterans and their families. Examples include:

  • A recruiting project team that focuses on military and veteran outreach, partnerships with associations and participation in career fairs that focus on veterans. The company also dedicated a section of its career website to attract military veterans;
  • In 2008, The Hartford formed a support network for the company's reserve component soldiers, sailors, airmen, marines and coastguardsmen. This network is also open to all employees. In 2012, this group will be sanctioned as an official Veterans Employee Resource Group at The Hartford;
  • An annual Veteran’s Day ceremony for employees; and
  • The Hartford’s employees across the country sent more than 2,400 holiday cards to troops serving overseas as part of the company’s annual “Put the Hart in the Holidays” program.
