COLLEGE PARK, Md., June 6, 2012 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- University of Maryland President Wallace Loh announced today the appointment of Peter Weiler as the new vice president for university relations and president of the University of Maryland College Park Foundation.
Weiler has worked for 25 years in this field, rising to senior leadership positions at some leading public research universities with large and successful development programs.
He leaves his most recent position as vice president for advancement at the University of New Hampshire and president of the UNH Foundation, where he oversaw fundraising, alumni relations, marketing and communications activities.
Previously, he was senior vice president for development at The Ohio State University and president of the OSU Foundation. He was responsible for fundraising in academic colleges, the medical center, regional campuses and athletics. He helped design and lead Ohio State's current campaign with a $2.5 billion goal.
He had a long career at The Pennsylvania State University, rising to senior associate vice president for development and alumni relations and then to vice president for development. In the latter position, he managed a 300-member fundraising staff and oversaw to completion Penn State's campaign of $1.3 billion. He then helped design and implement its on-going $2 billion campaign.
"I'm thrilled that Peter is joining us," said President Loh. "He's a national leader in university development. His leadership, vision, and experience make him a tremendous asset for the University of Maryland."
"I am excited to be joining the University of Maryland family," said Weiler. "An opportunity to work at one of the premier research universities in the country is a true professional honor, and I look forward to working with Maryland's outstanding Trustees, alumni, students, faculty and staff."
A graduate of the University of Vermont (BA, psychology; MA, higher education), Weiler has served on the boards of community organizations that include United Way, Central Pennsylvania Festival of the Arts, and Special Olympics. His spouse, Karen, received a BS in nursing from the University of Vermont, and an MS in nursing from UCLA. They have three children, Jamie, Griffin and Mac.
Weiler replaces Brodie Remington, who served as vice president for university relations for the past 12 years and designed and led the $1 billion "Great Expectations" campaign. Remington will stay on until the expected completion of the campaign in December 2012.
Weiler will officially assume his duties on August 22, 2012.
