Time Warner Cable Partners with 826 National to Change Youth Perceptions of Math and Science Through Creative Writing

Time Warner Cable’s philanthropic initiative, Connect a Million Minds (CAMM), today announced a new partnership with 826 National as its Commitment to Action at CGI America, a meeting of the Clinton Global Initiative in Chicago June 7-8. 826 National is a network of eight nonprofit centers that work with more than 29,000 low-income students, ages 6-18, to improve their writing skills through a series of innovative programs.
Through this partnership, Time Warner Cable will fund the development of a pilot program that incorporates science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) principles into 826 National’s proven creative writing model. This commitment builds upon Time Warner Cable’s efforts to inspire the next generation of problem solvers by connecting young people to informal STEM learning opportunities. The Coalition for Science After School (CSAS), an existing CAMM national non-profit partner, will assist in developing the STEM aspects of the pilot curriculum.
“We are very excited to announce our partnership with 826 National at CGI America, an event that gives us an extraordinary platform to raise awareness of STEM,” said Tessie Topol, Time Warner Cable’s Senior Director of Strategic Philanthropy and Community Affairs. “By integrating STEM learning opportunities into a highly creative out-of-school program where they do not traditionally exist, we are giving young people new ways to discover the wonders of STEM.”
"Since attending CGI America last year, 826 National has been thinking about how our organization and its unique focus on writing might contribute to enhancing our students' interest in STEM,” said Gerald Richards, CEO, 826 National. "Not by straying from our mission, which puts fun and creativity first, but by infusing what we already do well into the equation. We are proud to partner with Time Warner Cable and CSAS on this innovative program.”
Ninety students will participate in these action-packed four-week workshops at 826 National locations in New York City, Los Angeles and San Francisco this summer. Lessons will include the science behind ice cream and deep space exploration. They will culminate in the publishing of a chapbook and celebration.
About Connect a Million Minds
Time Warner Cable’s (TWC) Connect a Million Minds (CAMM) is a five-year, $100 million philanthropic initiative to address America’s declining proficiency in science, technology, engineering and math (STEM). Using its media assets, TWC creates awareness of the issue and inspires students to develop the STEM skills they need to become the problem solvers of tomorrow. Program highlights include: original PSAs that challenge public perceptions of STEM; a unique website where the public can pledge to connect young people with the wonders of science; “The Connectory”, an online resource for parents to find informal STEM learning opportunities in their communities; grants to non-profit organizations that bring after-school STEM learning to students; TWC employees, over 50,000 strong, who volunteer their time at events like science fairs and robotics competitions. National partners include CSAS (Coalition for Science After School) and FIRST (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology).
