Kevin J. Cloherty Named Global Compliance Chief For Manulife Financial And John Hancock

BOSTON, Aug. 27, 2012 /PRNewswire/ -- John Hancock Financial, the US division of Manulife Financial Corporation, announced that Kevin J. Cloherty has been named Senior Vice President and Global Compliance Chief. Mr. Cloherty succeeds James D. Gallagher who was appointed General Counsel and Chief Administrative Officer for John Hancock. Mr. Cloherty's new role became effective on August 1.
Mr. Cloherty had been Senior Vice President and Deputy Global Compliance Chief to Mr. Gallagher. In his new role, he is responsible for Manulife's compliance activities throughout Canada, Asia and the United States. He reports to J-P. Bisnaire, Manulife's Senior Executive Vice President, Corporate Development and General Counsel, and the Audit Committee of Manulife's Board. Mr. Cloherty is based in Boston.
"Kevin's responsibilities have included serving as advisory counsel to the global compliance community in North America and Asia, as chief counsel to John Hancock's chief compliance officer, and as chief counsel for Manulife's Reinsurance Division and head of its legal team. He has been a valued key advisor to Jim Gallagher, and we congratulate him on his new role," said Mr. Bisnaire.
Mr. Cloherty joined Manulife and John Hancock in 2005 from Testa, Hurwitz & Thibeault LLP, where he was a partner in the Litigation Practice Group specializing in Internal Investigations and White Collar Criminal Defense. Previously, he was Chief of the Drug Unit in the Boston U.S. Attorney's office and the Organized Crime Drug Enforcement Task Force Coordinator for New England, as well as the interim Director of the High Intensity Drug Trafficking Area for New England. In total, Mr. Cloherty spent 11 years with the United States Department of Justice.
He is a cum laude graduate of Harvard Law School and a summa cum laude graduate of Tufts University.
